Guidance

Active shooter incidents are unpredictable and evolve quickly.

How you react can save your life and that of others.

An active shooter is an individual engaged in attempting to kill people in a confined space or populated area.

Active shooters typically use firearms. There may or may not be a pattern, to the active shooters selection of victims.

Your safety is situation dependent on what action you take.

These unplanned events are fluid. Be prepared to switch between options.

RUN

To a place of safety.

This is a far better option than to surrender or negotiate.

Leave your belongings behind. Take only essentials:

– Wallet with identification

– Mobile phone

If it is unsafe to evacuate an area due to an imminent threat, then consider next steps.T

HIDE

It’s better to hide than to confront.

Actions to take when hiding:

– Remain inside the building or office and protect yourself there

– Close and lock all doors and windows

– Blockade entry points with heavy furniture

– Close blinds and curtains

– Turn off lights

– Keep silent

– Turn your mobile phone volume to silent and no vibration

– Activate the Help Alert in the Core Lite app. Your details and live location will be shared with Contact(s) via SMS. Viewable on any connected device.

– Secure any plant or machinery that may pose a hazard

– Use duct tape or a similar to seal all cracks around the door and any vents into the room

– Monitor media channels

FIGHT

When you cannot RUN or HIDE, attempt to disrupt the attack or disable the offender(s).

Be aggressive and commit to your actions.

Recruit others to ambush the offender(s) with makeshift weapons like chairs, fire extinguishers, scissors, books, etc.

Be prepared to cause severe or lethal injury to the offender(s).

Wounded. If you become wounded during a a confrontation, take care of yourself first and then, if you are able, help other wounded get to safety. Contact emergency services.T

TELL

The police what has happened either in person or by phone.

Detail who you are and any persons with you.

Detail the location and numbers of any other persons hidden.

If you call emergency services but cannot speak due the proximity of the shooter, leave the line open and allow the dispatcher to listen.

If you can speak, detail your location.

Look for and use landmarks or buildings as a reference if unsure. If in a building, fire evacuation plans are usually posted on a wall near a main entrance/exit.

You may be asked to provide the following information on what you see or hear. Only do this if it is safe to do so.

Activate the Help Alert in Core Lite.

You can choose:

– To only notify selected contacts. They will be able to view your live location.

AND

– To notify 911 by phone call (preferred). US only.

OR

– To notify 911 by text (if unable to speak). US only.

Once you have activated the Help Alert, a link will be displayed.

Tell emergency services that you can share your details and live location via a link you can share with them. Emergency dispatch will advise whether they can accept the link.

Police contact

At some point during a shooter event you will have contact with police:

– Show your hands

– Avoid sudden movements

– Listen to instructions

– Report to designated areas to provide information

Police or specialists will take steps to verify your identify. Warning. It may be confronting to some people.
